Obscure, Yet Relevant Niigata

So It's Tanabata time in Japan and I came across an interesting article about how the good people of Sado Island are celebrating the holiday. Typically, people write wishes on slips of paper called tanzaku and then hang them on bamboo where they hang until they're eventually sent off floating into the sea and burned.

On Sado Island, it looks like particants can cut out the middle man and place their wishes 24-meters below on the seabed using special bamboo poles. Even if your wish isn't granted, scuba diving in the warm waters of Sado sounds like an unforgetable experience in itself.
